crumpled paper sack mountains, lit by flashlight

If you want to write a song about the moon

Walk along the craters in the afternoon

When the shadows are deep and the light is alien

And gravity leaps like a knife off the pavement

And you want to write a song about the moon

You want to write a spiritual tune

Na na na na na na

Yeah yeah yeah

Presto! a song about the moon ...

lyrics by Paul Simon, Songs About the Moon

from the 1983 album Hearts and Bones

the geek behind the curtain: all photos and layers in this assemblage were taken and developed by myself.

set up this shot in the downstairs bathroom last night after people went to sleep. crumpled up a torn paper sack, lit it with a flashlight. the texture in the "sky" is the texture from the wall. the bits of cloud are an old shot with the contrast turned up and the opacity turned down. the moon is also an older shot, both of those from february of this year. the mountain shot was copied onto three layers. the top layer was unsharp-mask'd, the bottom two layers of mountain had various strengths of gaussian blur applied, then were blended together with layer masks and the gradient tool. last i added a layer of pure black, added a layer mask and blended it with a gradient, then dropped the opacity slightly. the layer with the moon shot was pulled onto the top. flattened the image, and "viola."

ODC: Replace (this speaks to "replace/reuse/recycle" for me, but also i've replaced real mountains with paper ones if you prefer.)
