death of a camera

My S5, which has felt like an extension of my body, has called it quits after 9566 shots and is totally unusable. I contacted Canon and got the repair info and even packed up the camera in a box to take to UPS. It would cost $139 + $10 s/h + tax to fix.

But then, when I went online to find out how much an S5 costs these days, in order to know how much to insure it for (it still sells for $500), I started thinking about maybe getting the newest Canon SX40:

35x zoom = 24-840mm

2.7" display

no RAW

1.32 lbs w batteries (21.1 oz) vs. 15.9 oz for S5

Price: $429

or the newest Panasonic DMC FZ150

24x zoom= 25-600mm

3" display

Leica lens

Can shoot in RAW mode

1.16 lbs (18.5 oz) w memory card and battery

Low price: $480

Comparison of the two:

I'm just not sure I want to get the DSLR Canon EOS Rebel T3i and pay a couple hundred dollars more:

Price (body only, I have lenses): $695

I'll go over to Best Buy tomorrow to see what the cameras feel like in my hands and do some more online research.

I would welcome any suggestions and advice.

Decisions, decisions....
