Athens, GA (Clarke County) Copyright 2012 D. Nelson

One of 15 old oak trees being taken down at Barrow Elementary to make way for new school buildings. This is just one of several "deforestation" projects around town. Trees are falling left and right, leaving the streets without shade, just as temperatures soar above 100 F.

Summer is typically the time of year in Athens for construction projects, as students are mostly gone and the lighter traffic allows for road closures. But I have never seen so many trees being felled, and I doubt it was all necessary.

Look at that root ball ... this tree must have been there for at least 50 years.
