Homeward Bound
Well… Roadtrip 2012 is finally underway. Everyone keeps asking where I am going… Here it is…
The company I shoot for has never covered anything east of the Mississippi River before, but we do now.
Just a few months ago, we decided to tackle Florida. It is one of the biggest tourist spots in the country. Lots of places selling postcards and souvenirs. My boss figured it would be a few years before we really got established there. He was wrong. We are doing extremely well there already. Apparently our competition has been lazy and customers there were just begging for some new Florida products. We're doing well enough there that this year's trip to Utah, Colorado, and northern California has been completely cancelled. I am going to Florida.
Yes… I am going to Florida in the summer. Interesting… Usually I leave Phoenix to escape from the heat. Now I can enjoy heat AND humidity. That kind of sucks!
So… My feelings on this summer's trip are very mixed. It's kind of good news/bad news.
The bad news… I've spent two winters in Florida, so can speak from experience that Florida pretty much sucks to shoot. Most of the state is flat, boring, and ugly and is just horribly difficult to photograph. I struggled like crazy to get any nice photos when I was there. It will be hot and disgustingly humid, and probably insanely buggy in most of the places I go. So… That is the bad news.
The good news… I'm kind of tired of the desert. This could be a really nice change of pace. It will be great to see some green. I love spanish moss and live oak trees. It will also be great to see the ocean and Gulf Of Mexico. I LOVE the aqua color of the water in the Gulf.
The other good news. I have only seen Florida in the winter. Winter weather in Florida is BORING for photography. Solid blue skies every day for months and months. I HATE nice weather. In the summer, there is a thunderstorm every afternoon which might make for some FANTASTIC photography! There's no better time to shoot than right after a storm. It will also be great to visit some of my family while there.

So... This photo is from a few years back. Taken during one of those winters I spent in Florida. It's the dunes in Anastasia State Park, in St. Augustine.
