"Get closer" is the photography technique intended to be illustrated here. Oftentimes photos can be improved by getting closer and drawing the viewer's attention to the subject to the exclusion of the background or other environmental elements.

Read my (Mike Baird's) tutorial on how to take good surf photos.

      Update:

There are apparently two separate 4Runner sites and Toyota has removed the Flickr photos from www.toyota.com/vehicles/minisite/4Runner/ but not from www.toyota.com/new4runner/

I never cared much for surfing until now. Such a powerful photo it appears to be a self portrait. Up close and personal.

janet_farthing Thanks for asking about using my photos for your art. www.flickr.com/people/mikebaird/#credit answers every question ever asked about using my photos with attribution and link backs where applicable, adding use comments, etc. There is a sub-paragraph there for artists, and for using people images w/o model releases (i.e., can't be used in advertising, etc.). Hope that answers all -if not, please do get back.

Wow, fantastic shot. Knowing my luck the lens would fall from the monopod and take the camera with it! Awesome!
