Disneyland Haunted Mansion Stained Glass Lamp
Designed by Jody Daily
Glass, Metal, and Resin.
Released in 2005. Limited Edition of 999.
This was another of Jody's lamp concepts using elements taken directly from a Disneyland attraction. One of Marc Davis' wonderfully wry characters from the Mansion's stretching portraits sits contentedly atop the tombstone of her "beloved George", beneath a "spider web" shade. The base resembles the moulded wood paneling in the attraction's ghostly corridors. We've always loved the abstract "skulls" that Imagineer Rolly Crump cleverly "hid" in the moulding, which Jody made sure to incorporate into the lamp's base, as well. One of Rolly's famous "bat stancions" serves nicely as the metal finial.
One funny story on the sculpting of this piece in China...
The final sculpt is terrific, but it had to go through a few revisions before Jody would approve it. It seems the Chinese sculptor working on the piece was thrown off by the woman's hair style, earrings and facial features pictured on the artwork, which must have resembled those of Buddha. The first sample sculpt arrived with a beautifully rendered Buddha sitting on the tombstone! Even though we admired the sculptor's efforts, it took several emails and sketches to explain why this wasn't the desired look for this item!
All turned out great in the end, of course...and, yes, we kept the one-of-a-kind "Buddha" version!
