'l'espoir' On Black

This photograph is taken at the sea-side in Belgium, in the summer of 1999. I was there as a volunteer on a summer-vacation with disabled people. The small organisation is called " Ter Helme".

I participated at a contest with this photo, which asked to send photos that represent Belgium. I really like this one, because it represents 3 aspects of Belgium: our ugly but so typical sea-shore and its buildings (that most belgians will remember because they've spend their childhood playing there in the sand), the wheelchair is the symbol of our excellent social security and again the wheelchair as a wink at all those volunteers doing a great job.

What makes it powerful to me, is that there is no-one sitting on the wheelchair... you can imagine a whole story about it... it makes me think...

But please, don't forget the people that are sitting in it ! A smile a day... keeps the doctor away !!! :o)
