Florida Sand Skink

Plestiodon (Neoseps) reynoldsi


An adult from the sandy ridges of central Florida. A small sand-swimming species that is in the process of evolving legglessness. It's legs have been reduced to small vestigial limbs which are essentially useless. This species spends much of its time in the loose sand searching for invertebrates. This is a Federally Threatened species which faces threats from habitat loss and development.
