On Saturday, October 9, 2010, the Michigan Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (MBC-LEO) held its 6th Annual Fundraiser at the Bernhardt Center-Western Michigan University, hosted by Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell. The event, with the theme, Defeating the Odds, Creating the Possible, was well attended with over 100 municipal officials, local business leaders, and WMU students in attendance. Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence, the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor was the keynote speaker. Funds were raised to help develop a scholarship fund for current municipal officials’ training and students interested in local government.
