Galapagos Islands

At the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center in Villamil, giant tortoises are protected during thei first five years of life. Until age five, their shells remain soft, making them prime targets for attack by introduced species like rats, cats and dogs. At age five, they are introduced to the wild in order to rebuild the wild population.
