Also known as the red ape or ‘old man of the forest’ and renowned for their intelligence and strength, Bornean orang-utans are the largest tree-living mammals. They are not as endangered as their Sumatran cousins, but increasingly threatened by deforestation of their habitat and conversion of their land to palm oil plantations. Young orang-utans are still being captured for the illegal pet trade.

Male orang-utans are much bigger than the females; their huge cheek pads (made of fat) show when they are adult and sexually mature.
