60th Anniversary of Ireland's Participating in UN Peacekeeping Operations
In Dublin Castle, on Sunday, 24 June, 2018, led by the President Michael D. Higgins, the State formally marked 60 years of Ireland's contribution to UN Peacekeeping Operations. In 1958, three years after Ireland gained membership of the United Nations Organisation, 50 Irish Defence Forces commissioned officers were deployed to the UN Observer Group in Lebanon. Currently, there are 637 Defence Forces personnel serving overseas on 9 different missions. 86 members of the Defence Forces and 1 member of An Garda Siochana lost their lives on overseas peacekeeping operations.
