A new transportation agency created by the State of California for the purposes of funding, planning, constructing and coordinating transportation improvement programs countywide.

Merged with the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD, 1964-1993) on April 1, 1993.

Successful in passing two half cent sales taxes for transportation improvements, including the construction of light rail, heavy rail (subway), HOV/Carpool lanes, busways, soundwalls, bicycle facilities, park-n-ride facilities and Intelligent Transportation Systems.
