Pit pony shoe obverse

Horse shoe showing nail hole, from a pit pony that worked in the Katoomba coal mine 1878-1903, recently recovered from the Federal Pass walking track having lain there for the last century. The ponies spent their lives in the mines pulling coal skips until they were too old to work and were sold to the knacker or let loose by a caring miner, eventually sheding their shoes; see the Track ponies picture for a view of their descendents. The Federal Pass walking track was constructed in 1901 and follows part of the original coal mine tram way.
