Geodesic Dome Pond
Brisbane has two public botanical gardens, one is in the CBD and the other in the western suburb of Mount Coot-tha.
One feature of Mount Coot-tha is a geodesic dome with a large pond centrally located inside. This shot is into the water and shows side wall and the reflection of the roof.
The Tropical Dome at Mount Coot-tha displays the plants of the tropics. The geodesic dome encloses and protects the rare, fragile and exotic plants. These wet, tropical plants need a humid, warm and stable environment to flourish, so climatic conditions and nutrient levels within the dome are monitored and corrected as needed. The dome is designed so that the temperature ranges between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius. Humidity variation is around 2 per cent. Even the soil is special - a sterile mix of sand, peat moss and soil.
