Cornelis Ketel (1548-1616) – Portrait of a Giant Porter, detail. Royal Collection, Hampton Court Palace.
The Tudor Court was staffed and guarded by soldiers, gatekeepers and porters. Some were clearly built for the task. This is a life-size portrait of an enormous man who patrolled the palace corridors during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
