Often photographed, seldom shared - Church of St. John in Ranui

When researching the Dolomites I often came across photos of the church with the dramatic background. When you see it, you know it. But it's frustratingly poor on information around it. It's like nobody wants to share. The additional annoyance is the town where this is located - it's inconsistently called Santa Magdalena, and no two maps or schedule searches spell it the same way - just like 5000 other places in Italy with the same name, which really doesn't help.

On this vacation I made it a point to figure out how to get there. From the town of Brixen, bus #340 goes to "St. Maddalenna" and the last stop on this bus is Ranui. Just across the road from Ranui is a pasture and you'll see the church in the distance. The pasture in front of the church has been closed off and signposted - presumably a lot of tourists were wandering into the pasture to take photos. No more!

However from that last bus stop, it's a 2 minute walk up the road. A sign to the right by a hotel leads to a slightly roped off area where you can stand and look at the church.

My timing was bad - went early morning so the sun was directly behind. Decided to use the spire to sort of block it out. You have to make the most of your limited time on a holiday.
