Alien Spiranthes species in The Netherlands

The last year several alien Spiranthes species where found in nature reserves. Spiranthes species which are not native to Netherlands and even continental Europe. In the Netherlands the following alien species can be found: Spiranthes romanzoffiana, Spiranthes kern var. cernua, Spiranthes kern var. odorata, Spiranthes lucida and Spiranthes lacera. Spiranthes species which are native to The Netherlands are Spiranthes aestivalis (extinct) and Spiranthes spiralis. Almost certainly the alien Spiranthes species in nature reserves derive from escaped garden plants. Spiranthes cernua var. odarata "Chadds Ford" is very common and is sold in several garden centers. They multiple and can colonize suitable habitat very easily. At this station plants grow on a sedum roof where plants endure extreme conditions. The plants flower two consecutive years.
