Quilted bedcover, Italy, 1355-1400. Museum no. 1391-1904

DRAFT OBJECT LABEL FOR THE QUILT

Quilt

About 1355–1400

Faded by time, this huge bed covering depicts Tristan, one of the heroes of medieval romance literature. Fourteen episodes from his adventures, captioned in Italian, relate to the oppression of Cornwall by King Languis of Ireland. They are now slightly jumbled by later restoration. King Mark of Cornwall sits enthroned and crowned. His nephew, Tristan, is recognisable by his shield emblazoned with three horns; his enemy Morold carries a shield with fleur-de-lis.

    Hi Jane,

Sorry for the delay in responding. There is conservation work going on at the moment - the quilt will go into the new galleries in November 2009. I very fine mesh is being apllied to support areas of the surface - you can see bundle of it on the right edge of the table. I'm going to write something up about this for the blog in due course. It is a fantastic object - it looks even better in real life.

My colleague Simon Carter took the pictures - he is a very good photographer!

    Best wishes,

    Stuart
