Great great grandfather Malcolm McNaughton

Malcolm was born in Argyle, New York, 1798. He was the son of Findlay and Elizabeth (Murray) McNaughton. Findlay was born in New Windsor or Argyle, New York in 1770. Findlay’s father Malcolm came to New Windsor, NY with his Uncle Alexander.

Malcolm married Phebe McDoual in May 10th, 1837, and they had Samuel James in 1851.

This photo was not labeled and so I did wonder if it was Malcolm for sure. I had wondered if it might be Mary’s husband, William Robertson, Jr., although that seemed unlikely. I did a little sleuthing and I believe if it was Mary’s husband, he would likely be in a uniform or have some military prop, like a saber. Malcolm was a lawyer, and I realized that it fits for him to be holding a book. I wish I knew what the pin he had was.

He's got quite a beard! Was it a status symbol?

The photographer is H. M. Wells, Cambridge, NY. This is a scalloped cabinet card, waste up view.
