Hawa Hawa - A Hawa - Bijli Bana day....
Located close to Jhimpir town of Thatta district in about 100 kilometers (km) northeast of Karachi, Zorlu Enerji Power Project is the first privately owned and financed wind power project in Pakistan constructed under the Renewable Energy Policy, 2006. The Asian Development Bank provided a loan of $36 million to M/s. Zorlu Enerji Pakistan Limited through its private sector operations department.
The project will supply power to the national grid under a 20-year take-or-pay energy purchase agreement under a tariff approved by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority.
The project involves construction, erection, and operation of a 56.4 megawatt (MW) wind power farm at Jhimpir spread over about 5 square kilometers. The project’s civil works include turbine (tower) foundations, substation and transformer foundations, and related works. Power evacuation from the project to the national grid will be through a 132 kilovolt (kV) line, built and operated by the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), the national grid operator.
The Project’s objectives are to; (i) increase incremental supply of energy to reduce a growing energy deficit which is seriously constraining economic growth, (ii) increase access to energy for households, business and industry, (iii) make efficient use of an energy resource which is domestic and renewable, this reduces the reliance on expensive oil imports; and (iv) reduce emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases.
The project will also contribute to the creation of employment opportunities and stimulation of
economic growth in southern Sindh.
The Project is expected to become operational within next two months.
