Bugaku on Miyajima 宮島の舞楽
Bugaku, the traditional dance-music of the Japanese Imperial court, developed from music and dance imported from China, Korea, India and Southeast Asia and dates from the 5th Century. Today, it survives only in Japan. These dancers evoke the restrained elegance of ancient courtly culture of the Heian period, which lasted from the 8th to10th century in Japan. Today it is only performed on special occasions. I stumbled upon this performance at a wedding at Itsukushima Shrine on the sacred island of Miyajima, famous for its floating torii, or spiritual gate.
