M I S E D A S H I : Umbrella in Hand

After almost a year of training, two young girls make their debut as maiko, or apprentice geiko, dressed in priceless formal black kimono and obi with equally precious hair ornaments. On their first day as maiko, they make their way through the neighborhood, introducing themselves with their new, professional names to the owners and mistresses of local teahouses and establishments.


Due to the rainy weather earlier that day, their rich, brocaded silk obi were protected by a thin plastice cover. They also carried traditional, oiled-paper umbrellas and wore a special kind of black laquered geta (wooden sandal) to protect keep their white tabi socks dry...
