Approaching the Dream
Earlier this month I had the great fortune of reaching the top of Mt. Rainier for the fifth time. This trip was extra special for a several reasons. First, our friends Mike and Kayleen flew out from Maryland. For the past ten years they dreamed of one day standing on Rainier's summit. Helping them reach the top was a definite highlight of the summer. Second, we had the route to ourselves. Crap weather, fog, drizzle, snow, detered other parties from making the trip up to Campo Schurman. It was sweet waking up at 12:15 am, unzipping the tent door, and seeing stars above and clouds below. Lastly, the sunrise was the best I'd seen from Rainier. Unfortunately, I kept my camera in my pack, missing much of the best color (I'm still experiencing a bit of PTSD after watching a camera bag full of equipment roll into a crevase on Baker eight years ago.). In this shot, Kayleen and Mike are taking a well earned break somewhere around the 12,500 foot level.
