Grand Palais 2

The Grand Palais, Paris was constructed for the 1900 World exhibition to outdo London's Crystal Palace built in 1851. I just caught the last days of its 2 week temporary reopening after 12 years of restoration and 120 M€. The 8500 ton steel framework weighs more than the Eiffel Tower. This set also shows the superb art deco staircase and the stunning celestial and terrestrial globes designed by the Venetian geographer Vincenzo Coronelli and presented to Louis XIV in 1683. The celestial globe shows the positions of the constellations on the day of the King's birth 05/09/1638. Note the inscriptions are in the 4 savant languages, French, Latin, Greek and Arab. No English, this was several decades before the English scientific renaissance! The terrestrial globe is amazingly accurate for 430 years ago, although California seems even more detached from the real world than it is now ... ;-)

The Grand Palais closes after this weekend so the interior space can be finished and Coronelli Globes will be restored and mounted properly , instead of hanging from cranes ...
