feeding an elephant

    They love oranges.

This was at a tourist attraction near the Addo Elephant Reserve, although not affiliated with the sanctuary. These elephants roam free on the property most of the time, except when they are rounded up 3-4 times a day to carry foreigners like us around, very similar to trail rides on horses. We were told that as adolescents they were relocated to this park from a refuge in Zimbabwe to alleviate overcrowding. The guides who controlled and steered the elephants were all Zimbabwean, too. Riding one is a crazy experience because they're so impossibly big, agile, and smart.

Trunk up! I've been here too. Crazy mini bus driver took us there at high speed along the edge of those tiny cliffs. Never been so terrified! Elephants calmed me down when I got there though...

Wow, those cliffs were totally daunting to us too and our driver took us there at a snail's pace.
