St. Paul's Chapel (1764)
1 World Trade Center (2013)
Built in 1764- the oldest church on the island of Manhattan. George Washington came here on the day of his inauguration at nearby Federal Hall in 1789.
The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center stood directly across the street behind the Chapel, and while the graveyard suffered tree damage, the church itself was miraculously unscathed. In the months following September 11, St. Paul's served as a place of respite and solace for families and for rescue/recovery workers. Today the inside holds a collection of cards, letters, and posters sent to New York from around the country and world during the period following the disaster.
The new One World Trade Center is now just days of becoming the tallest building in New York, and has surpassed 100 floors. It's the most spectacular construction project the city has seen since the Twin Towers
