demery before & after

here's another before and after of demery. for this image i used a skin smoothing technique that i like for a more dramatic beauty effect. here's more or less what i did:

as always, i start by cleaning up blemishes on a new layer. i typically use a combination of healing, patch and clone tools. the healing brush tends to be my tool of choice for most of this work. adjust layer opacity if it looks too processed when you're done.

i then created a new stamp visible layer, inverted it and changed the blend mode to vivid light (if you try this and your image looks like a strange gray blob at this point, you're on the right track). convert to Smart Object, so you can apply the following filters non-destructively.

1) smooth with a big fat hi pass filter - 20-30 pixels worth. Since the layer is inverted, hi pass blurs instead of sharpens (i can't explain the math but trust me on this).

2) now bring back some skin texture with the gaussian blur - 2-5 pixels. yep, it sharpens the inverted image.

Now apply black layer mask to hide the whole shebang, and paint in the smoothing effect where you want it.

this image also needed a LOT of hair touch up - shaping, toning, fly-aways (i freekin' HATE fly aways)!

dodging and burning

eye pop

recontour ear and neck and soften neck folds

1-2 hours total processing time for an image like this
