Emergency War Orders Safe, Titan II Launch Control Center

12 December 2009. At the Titan Missile Museum / Site 571-7, Sahuarita, AZ.

See www.crypto.com/blog/titans/

The safe, locked by a combination lock and two padlocks, contains the launch keys and codes. It appears to be a standard GSA Class 2 fireproof container (made by Diebold), rated to resist forced entry for five minutes. The padlocks -- one for each launch officer -- are commercial off-the-shelf four digit combination locks (they do not offer any serious resistance to forced entry or manipulation).

The top drawer (with the launch codebook and keys) is painted bright red.

The keys in the plexiglass case on top of the safe are various utility keys for the complex, not the launch keys.

Zeiss 21mm/2.8 ZF.2 Distagon (@ f/3.5), Nikon D3s camera (@ ISO 3200); available light, handheld.

No emulsions were harmed in the making of this image.
