Lightnin' Rod - Hustlers Convention

Is this the first gangster rap record? Recorded as a story of a 'Stagger Lee' style hustler and his journey through the city, this is an incredible combination of Jalal from The Last Poets rapping over tight blacksploitation funk from Kool And The Gang. Yep, that's Kool And The Gang - one of the funkiest bands of the 70's before they became famous for their disco/pop albums in the 80s.


This is full of great tracks, and the unfolding story makes it an album you can listen to all the way through. The most famous track is 'Sport', sampled by Jungle Brothers on 'Black is Black':
