234 | Elise and the magic trees

Elise Hensler was the second wife of King D. Fernando II of Portugal. The King was known as The Artist for its great tenor voice and aptitude to draw and collect works of art. Elise was a Swiss young lady educated in Boston, who came to Portugal, with her mother to sing at, the National Opera House, Teatro São Carlos. D. Fernando II fell in love with her and they got married.

On their wedding day, June 10, 1869, Elise and Fernando planted what came to be a huge eucalyptus tree, standing in the garden of Elise's Chalet, a North American style country home, designed by herself and built nearby the Pena Palace (It is now closed to the public due to an ongoing renovation process). The King was a Botanic lover and the plantation of thousands of trees in the Pena Park was, at that time, taking place. Elise was then responsible for the introduction of the North America tree species in the park.

This photo is a very simple tribute to their love for arts and artists and their life dedication to trees and Sintra's Romantic Forest.
