The photographs in this set record the construction of the Hoosac Tunnel in Massachusetts from 1848 to 1875. These images show not only the construction of the tunnel but also the work buildings surrounding the tunnel and the tools developed specifically for the tunnel project. The digitization of these photographs was made possible by the "Mapping Massachusetts: the History of Transportation in the Commonwealth" grant awarded to the State Library of Massachusetts by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. More images from this grant project can be viewed in the "Board of Harbor and Land Commissioners Maps" set and the "Highway Photographs" set.
