UMass Lowell Service Learning
In a massive service learning partnership project with GEAR UP, Lowell High School and UMass Lowell (UML), and with support from a grant written by UML English Professor Matthew Hurwitz (pictured above), UML students mentored Lowell High School students throughout the spring semester. Over one hundred UML College Writing II students were paired with Lowell High School juniors and some seniors throughout the spring semester, where UML students visited LHS students to discuss college life and critique each other’s writing. Students presented their service learning research project to the participating LHS students, teachers, administrators, and community partners at a culminating poster event at the University.
