Blue Quest

Cerulean Warbler - male

Setophaga cerulea

This has been one of my long-standing quest birds. While I've had one pointed out to me in the past, I never really got a good look so I was never able to really 'count' it. So, I went up to Old Mine Road IBA in the Delaware Water Gap hoping that I would find a breeder there.

I made it partway along the Old Mine Road and I had just listened to the call in my car (to get familiar) when I suddenly heard it outside. I jammed on the brakes and got out. zee zee zizizizi eeet - there it was! But I was having trouble actually SEEING it - which was the problem in the first place. In fact, there were TWO of them calling back and forth.

After a couple of quick pishes, there was motion in the underbrush ... but it was a veery. Still a cool bird but not the quest bird. I was about to pish again when suddenly a small bird flew into view - the CERULEAN WARBLER!! I pished again, and it flew right up to me.

He flew around me but stayed within 10' of me for about 15 minutes, which was a thrill for my first look at this beautiful bird. I took about 150 pictures and this is my favorite from my first run-through.
