Calycanthus floridus flower, aka Carolina sweetshrub, Carolina spicebush, and other common names

    Newer Older

I wish I knew more about this plant. My wife and i both believe that people used to put the flowers in drawers with clothes, to make them more fragrant. The plant was growing in a sunny area, along US 123 in Pickens County. It was about 3/4 meter/yard tall, and the flower, or flowering head, was about 2 inches/6 cm across. This photo represents the actual reddish brown color pretty well. Any alternate color name suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks to gravitywave from the ID Please group for the identification. This is Calycanthus floridus. As the photo's new title suggests, it has a lot of common names, including strawberry shrub.

Wonderful shot Martin. What a beautiful plant. Gorgeous dark red colour. We don't have them over here, or at least I haven't seen one before. I really enjoy your plant pic's as I always learn something new.

Very interesting sparkly/granular texture in the petals! It almost looks like it's made of sugar.

Hello, I see someone likes flowers! I love calycanthus! I worked in plant production for 2 years and this is one plant we grew! Our calycanthus flowers were a variation in yellow. Easy to grow. Delicate flowers that only last a day if cut. We would grow it under a medium type shadecloth (not too sunny- like echinacea likes, not too shady like hostas like)...beautiful picture!
