Cotton, mature, Cherokee County

This is a mature cotton boll. Boll is the name of the fruit of the cotton plant, Gossypium. The white is fibers. There are supposed to be some seeds in there somewhere.

 

Here's a shot of the cotton field, and this is a shot of an unopened boll. There are larger sizes of this photo available.

 

At one time, this plant was grown over a lot of the Southern US. Now, it's rare to find it in South Carolina. There are fields in other states, Texas, for one.
