Sandbox | Martin Kramer on the Middle East The photo gallery I have assembled looks beyond the daunting logistics of the pilgrimage, at the more fundamental and dramatic transformation of Mecca in our time. Ultimately, the built environment of Islam's great city of pilgrimage is a setting in concrete, glass, and steel of politics, economics, and social change. A profound assessment would require an in-depth study. In this gallery, I offer some commentary as a prelude, for whoever wishes to probe further. I also refer you to the last pane, where I link to a number of my previous studies of Mecca and modern politics. Martin Kramer —September 24, 2015 Follow Martin Kramer: Website
