Succulents on the Salt-Pan in Kersefontein

Succulents growing in their harsh semi-desert habitat on the Salt-Pan in Kersefontein (Velddrif, Western Cape, South Africa, December 2006).

In Winter this Salt-Pan is transformed into shallow lake after the Winter rain, and then becomes a breading ground for Flamingos. As Spring arrives, the water quickly dries up, and only hardy Succulents are able to survive the extreme dry and salty conditions of this amazing and harsh environment.
