2010-09-30 033 v1 London Kensington Palace Gardens Anish Kapoor Sculptures

***22 May 2013 500 Views***

Over the winter London's Kensington Palace Gardens will feature four sculptures by Anish Kapoor. I took these photos as they were completing the installation.

These sculptures feature large highly polished stainless steel mirrors, and 'The distortions in the works' mirror-like surfaces call into question the viewers' relationship to both the work itself and the surrounding environment' (it says here!).

This is 'The Spire' and it was creating a very considerable amount of interest, in fact it was difficult to get a picture on account of the throng of people. Interestingly it has proved highly attractive to crane flies several of which had landed on it (I did try some pics but they weren't very successful). Not seen in the picture here is the security guard who has the job of preventing people getting too near to it. I learned from another security guard that these sculptures are to receive 24 hour a day cover in order to make sure nobody treads on them or otherwise damages them, not the best of jobs to have I should imagine!
