Charles McGee, a well known and respected Michigan sculptor, was the juror for this year’s biennial. A recipient of the Kresge Foundation’s first Eminent Artist Award in 2008, McGee has built an impressive 65-year career. He was educated at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (College for Creative Studies), and Escuela Massana, Barcelona, Spain.

McGee has had solo exhibitions in Michigan at the Muskegon Museum of Art, Eastern Michigan University, Sienna Heights College, Detroit Artists Market, and numerous galleries. His work has been in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, Saitama, Japan; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Brooklyn Museum, Columbia University, New York; Lee Nordness Gallery, New York; Palacio de la Virreina, Barcelona, Spain; Art in U.S. Embassies, Bangkok, Thailand and Howard University, Washington, DC. Detroit artist Charles McGee was the juror for the exhibition.

The prospectus announced that the exhibition was open to all living artists working in sculpture and residing within 200 miles of the Museum, and that the work must be entirely original and completed within the last 5 years. Each entry must be the sculpture of the person who submits it.

“We believe it’s important that the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum and Saginaw Valley State University support working artists, and hosting a biennial sculpture exhibition is an excellent way to do it,” said Marilyn Wheaton, Museum Director.

The juror awarded four Merit Awards that will be distributed at the July 3rd reception: First place $2,500, sponsored by the Doll-Loesel Foundation; second place $1,250, sponsored by Heinz and Marlis Haller; third place $850 and fourth place $400, sponsored by the Fredericks Family Foundation; and honorable mention $200.
