Yesterday, I spent at least 15 minutes laying flat on my belly, on the ground, in front of an ants' nest, trying to capture the little beasties at 2:1 magnification. I had a hard time trying to focus on them, as they were constantly on the move, hurrying to take advantage of the few days of good weather in the middle of wintertime (Halcyon days) to restock their nest. Luckily Messor are slow moving compared to other ant genera. But their shiny exoskeletons are highly reflective and I had a lot of trouble trying to expose them properly. Pump the flash and you get too much glare, open the aperture some more and you can't get enough depth-of-field (I settled for f/11), you get the picture... This was the best I managed, but I'm not satisfied yet, I'll practice more. Any ideas are welcome.
Since I captured this at 2:1 magnification and I haven't cropped it, I can deduct that the width of the photo corresponds to about 11mm in real life.
