This attractive and interesting species is endemic to the mountains of east-central Idaho and adjacent SW Montana, where it is found from the upper montane to lower alpine zones on rocky or gravelly slopes and ridges. Most populations are found in Idaho. Taller plants found at the lower portions of the elevational range were originally described as C. multisecta A. Nels.
