I stayed late to watch the sunset over the weekend at Point Reyes and caught this rutting bull elk in the moonlight. Elk like deer, often adorn their antlers with scooped-up grass and bracken to make them look bigger and more intimidating. He was lead bull in a herd of only bulls.
The successful bulls have their own individual herds of cows and young, and the unsuccessful end up herding together in a sort of group of bachelors. If they were deer, I'd be doing a stag party pun right now, but I can't :-(.
I tweaked the image a little in aviary to make it more silhouette like.
