Pink River Dolphin- Inia geoffrensis geoffrensis

Loreto, Peru

One of the coolest inhabitants of the Amazon is the pink river dolphin. We were lucky enough to see a bunch of these while we were on the boats to and from the field stations. I am going to try and hire a boat to take me to go get good photos of them this week.

One night we moored in a small coche off of the main river. As we were pulling in, a pod of dolphins were swimming around, but they disappeared after a while. I decided to sleep in a hammock on the back of the boat, and late that night I began hearing what sounded like occasional heavy breathing punctuating the frog-song of the night. The dolphins were back. They continued to swim around the boat all night, splashing occasionally. It was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had.
