Sandhill Cranes in Flight

Cranes congregate at dusk for another night at the Haehnle Sanctuary before taking the long trip down south for the winter.

Folks at the sanctuary say over 2,000 cranes will gather here during their fall migration. The sanctuary is a staging area of sorts for the cranes in the state to meet and group up before migrating south to Georgia and Florida. During the day the Sandhill Cranes split up and can be seen thoughout the area feeding in the farm fields. Then at dusk they all gather at the sanctuary for the night. The gathering is quite the sight with flocks of 50-100 cranes coming in at a time.
