Legend of the Giant Squid (available)
Broken Heart series, 2005
Acrylic gel on found window; mixed media background
53 in. x 15 in.
In the foreground, a large, phallic squid creature peers out at the viewer. The collage background consists of many, many pictures of meat. Although not a strict vegetarian, I do try to stay away from meat, especially when it comes from a source not known to me, as I find the idea of factory farming horrifying. Locating and cutting out all these photographs of meat was a trying experience. The more I looked, the more repulsed I got by the sight of raw or cooked muscle. Overlapping these meat images are photo reproductions of the muscular male form, replete with meat heads and vegetable body parts of enormous proportion. Interspersed are ads for virility and penis enlargements.
This piece is about the need to keep expanding in size and strength, something I think our society really thrusts at American males.
