Riverside is one of the oldest cemeteries in Madison County. I am interested in this cemetery for the NEFF family. My great-great Grandfather, Samuel Henry Neff and two of his brothers came to Jackson after the civil war. All three brothers were confederate soldiers who fought with 1st TN CAV. Their Dad, David Tennessee Neff, was a captain of 1st TN Cav. The family home in Jefferson County, TN was shelled during the war as well as used as a union hospital. There was much conflict in Jefferson County with a majority siding with the Union. My third great-grandmother in the midst of the war, packed and moved her family back to Shenandoah County, Virginia. The older children married spouses from Jefferson County, but my 2nd great-grandfather, married a cousin from Shenandoah County, Sarah Catharine Will. They raised their family in Jackson, TN and Sam Henry died in 1887, leaving Sarah with 10 children to raise. She drew a confederate pension as a widow. She died at age 96 in Jackson and was buried in her black tafeta wedding dress.
