Section Through Headhouse Interior, Cross Street Market Proposal
This is a callout illustration from the market proposal described here. This section was cut through one of the proposed market’s three headhouses to highlight their interior appearance.
The existing market, lacking sufficient windows, relies on a lot of artificial lighting to illuminate the still rather gloomy interior. The proposed replacement market incorporates several headhouse transept windows, arcade windows, transoms, and a vaulted glass roof to allow natural light to flood the interior. Arched steel or cast iron trusses support the glass roof and the weight is distributed to the ground via steel or cast iron columns (all fireproofed with intumescent paint). The ultimate intention is to make the interior of the proposed market feel light, airy, and cheerful.
