"Enough is enough – Open your mouth!", Demonstration against homophobia in Russia
On August 31, around 5.000 people came together in Berlin to protest against homophobia and the anti-gay laws in Russia. The rally started in the western part of the city and ended in front of the Russian embassy in central Berlin. The whole demonstration last over five hours.
LGBT-people in Russia are not only faced with every day homophobia. Russian laws, like the ban of “propaganda of non-traditional- sexual relation” and the law on “foreign agents”, violate basic human rights and impede the work of many NGOs. All together this created an environment which supported the growth of violence against LGBT-people and activists. Thus, the participants sent its critique not only to the Russian government. One also appealed to the German government and to all sponsors of the Olympic Winter games in Sotchi next year to “open your mouth!” Last but not least, the demonstration showed solidarity with all affected people in Russia.
