2020-09 Scarperia e San Piero, Palazzo dei Vicari. #Gp #Toscana #Ferrari1000
The Palazzo dei Vicari dominates the spacious square of the same name and is the symbolic monument of the village of Scarperia, as well as the only one of the Tuscan palaces that so strongly evokes the image of Florence. The name derives from the "Vicars" representatives of the republic of Florence in the territory who lived in the palace.
The current appearance is the result of a series of restoration works that lasted from 1932 to 1937 and which concerned the crenelated crowning that runs along the walkway. Now battlements and corbels decorate the façade and the whole building giving a new "medieval image" that draws on the model of the Florentine Palazzo della Signoria.
The pietra forte façade is adorned with numerous coats of arms in pietra serena and glazed terracotta, emblems of the successive Vicars in the government of the country; in the tower, 42 meters high, there is the majolica exhibition of the clock, the work of the Chini family, ceramic decorators of Borgo San Lorenzo, which in the last century replaced the old plaster quadrant, whose traces, looking carefully, are still visible.
